Sarbari is the granddaughter of Late
Pandit Santosh Kumar Banerjee who was a well-known Dhrupad singer. She got
her initial training from her mother Smt. Minoti Mukherjee. She then learnt
from Pandit Arun Bhaduri (Khayal) at the Sangeet Research Academy in India.
She got trained in Dhrupad from Pandit Arun Bhattacharya, Smt.Kaberi Kar and
Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar in the Guru Shishya parampara style. She also
has training in Tabla from Pandit Samir Chatterjee.
After her schooling from Loreto (Calcutta) Sarbari joined the Rabindra
Bharati University to study Hindustani Classical vocal music. She was the
gold medallist in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s examinations in her
university. She is a National Scholar (Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India) and has also received a grant from NADA in
Houston USA. She got the prestigious title of ‘Surmoni’ from Mumbai, India
in 1999 for her contribution to Dhrupad performance. She has composed and
sung for several TV serials in India and also writes regularly in newspapers
and cultural magazines.
Sarbari combines a depth of understanding of the theory behind the music
with her powerful imagination for melodious alaaps. Her rendition of dhrupad
and khayal evokes emotions in listeners that are almost as timeless and deep
in nature as religion itself. She is an exponent of both Classical and light
Classical music and is very popular with all kinds of listeners, the ones
steeped in the knowledge of Hindustani Classical as well as the ones
starting on the journey. She has performed on numerous occasions in various
cities across India and in the US in New York, Washington DC, Richmond and
Charlottesville. She is a Montessori certified teacher residing in northern
Virginia and takes an active role in the cultural activities of her
community. Apart from performing and touring, Sarbari trains both young and
adult classical vocalists in Hindustani classical and light Classical Music.
