Disciples:
In the Indian musical tradition, there is a very unique
system by which one generation passes down knowledge to the next, it is called
the Guru - Shishya Parampara. This master - disciple relationship
is different than a teacher - student relationship in that, a Guru is one's
guide in life (both musical and philosophical), and a Shishya is more like a son
or a daughter than simply a student. Traditionally, this relationship was
considered more important than even the relationship between a parent and a
child. It was believed that while a parent may bring you into this world, it is
only your Guru who can give you knowledge, defining your existence. In many
cases, the Shishya would stay with the Guru for a long period, becoming a member
of his/her family, perform chores that a son or a daughter would, and have
lessons in a very personal (intimate) setting. Times
have changed and so has the world. Many of the older traditions are being lost,
or rather, are being sacrificed for the sake of convenience. When one
goes to a music lesson nowadays, one is looking for one's money's worth, not
philosophical guidance in life. But those of us who are fortunate enough to have a
Guru who maintains the traditional practices, we few who, ourselves look for
something more in life (a void that can only be filled by a Guru), have the
opportunity to partake in this ancient ritual. Those
who are listed above as disciples have proven themselves worthy of receiving
guidance from their Guru. They have spent and continue to spend a major part of
their time with their Guru and look to him for answers in all aspects of their
lives. We (myself included) were then chosen by our Guru (Pandit Samir
Chatterjee) to become disciples via a (religious) ceremony, where, in front of
God, we accepted our first lessons as disciples. Some of us have been with him
for more than three decades while others have only known him for five years, but
our dedication, perseverance, and absolute faith in our Guru, binds us all as a
band of brothers and sisters (Guru-bhai-s & Guru-behan-s). - Dibyarka
Chatterjee
